Replacing window glass is a challenging task to perform, and doing it without proper knowledge can lead to expensive mistakes and accidents. It requires a lot of technique, precision, and patience, not to mention adherence to local codes and regulations — so always contact a professional to complete the project for you.
How We Replace Window Glass
Step 1: Prepare the work area
Firstly, we remove any curtains, blinds, or furniture near the window and clear the space, then lay a sheet of plastic or cloth over your floors for protection.
Step 2: Remove broken glass
We remove the old glass from the window while it is still installed. We always try to pull the glass out in one piece.
Step 3: Measure the window opening for glass replacement
We carefully measure the height, width, and weight of the window opening, precisely cut the piece of glass on-site, then test to make sure the pane fits properly before moving forward.
Step 4: Apply glazing compound and insert the replacement glass
We apply fresh window glazing compound around the window glass — this creates bedding for the glass to rest against the window frame. We then install the glass in place and secure it by adding more glazing compound around the frame. Keep in mind that the compound will take up to 7 days to fully dry.
Step 5: Clean up
We remove any residue left on the window pane and make sure the surfaces of the glazing compound are smooth. We clean the window with Central Glass’ unique glass cleaner and dispose of any waste materials.
How Much You Can Expect Window Replacement to Cost
The type of window you have and the glass you choose determines the replacement cost, so it can cost as little as $100 and as much as $700 to replace a window. Complicated replacement processes involving multiple panes will also increase the cost.
